I visited Japan about 17 years ago, and I brought home a few traditional items from local markets as my souvenirs. I have a lovely set of rice bowls and chopsticks from a local store in Yokohama, plus a red laquer tray, rice paper parasol, silky blue carp kite/windsock and a paper mache mask.
